LCCS Baseball Program
FORT WORTH – Former New York Yankee prospect and Bonham High School product Billy Coleman has been named the new varsity baseball coach at Lake Country Christian School, Athletic Director Matt McLeod announced Wednesday. He will begin to fulfill his duties immediately in preparation for the 2012 season.
“We are extremely excited that Coach Coleman has agreed to lead our high school baseball program,” Coach McLeod said. “Not only does he have the baseball background and experience to take our program to new levels, but he is also the type of man that we want our student-athletes to model their own lives after. He is exactly the person we were looking for to lead our program.”
Coach Coleman pitched collegiately at nearby Northwood Institute before being selected by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the 1991 Major League Baseball draft. He spent six seasons in the Yankees farm system until a tragic accident sidelined his professional career for nearly seven years. During that time away from the diamond, Coach Coleman spent time coaching at Shreveport’s Captain Shreve High School (5A public school) and private school power Evangel Christian Academy.
In 2002, Coach Coleman made a miraculous comeback to the mound when he returned to the Metroplex to pitch for the Fort Worth Cats. He would go on to pitch for the Newark Bears and Springfield-Ozark Mountain Ducks before retiring from the game. While in Springfield, Coach Coleman also served as the team’s pitching coach.
“Not only will Coach Coleman serve as our varsity head coach, but he will also give direct oversight to our baseball program from grades 6-12,” Coach McLeod added. “We know to truly build a championship program it starts from the bottom up, and that’s exactly what we plan to do. With Coach Coleman at the helm of our ship, we are confident the future will be very bright for Lake Country Christian baseball.”
