Music

Students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade receive curriculum-based instruction in music twice a week. The curriculum includes teaching familiar songs and games from our American heritage and patriotic songs, as well as an introduction to developing listening skills. In addition, students receive instruction in the Kodaly method of singing that emphasizes pitch recognition through the use of solfege syllables (do, re, mi). In conjunction with the Kodaly method and beginning in first grade, students are taught fundamental music reading skills. By the time they reach fourth and fifth grade, students have been given sequential instruction in note and rhythm recognition, allowing them to move into middle school with an essential understanding of how to read music.

Students in third grade follow through on their listening skills by attending a production of "The Nutcracker Ballet." Students in grades pre-K through 5th grade present one major program each year. The Pre-K through first grade present a program during the Christmas season, grades two and three present an early spring program, and grades four and five finish the year with a program in late spring. Each biblically-themed program is age-appropriate and incorporates singing, acting, and movement as well as costumes.

Band

Students in 5th Grade Band begin the year with new instruments in their hands. Each student is tested by our professional private teachers who give their expertise in advising the choice of instrument for each child.

Students in 5th Grade Band meet daily and are required to practice 60 minutes per week and have a curriculum-specific book that is used throughout the year. Their band book is supplemented with individual pieces of music as their skills advance.  Smart Music is a tool used by the student in the classroom and at home to advance student skills.

Because of the commitment to a practice routine, our students advance quickly through their first year, and they give three formal concerts: one in the fall, the spring, and the All-School Christmas Concert. Students also perform at special elementary school events.

Art

Art classes for students in grades pre-K through 5th grade cover the basic elements of art: line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space. Students apply these elements through art projects that include crafts, cut and paste, painting, watercolors, collages and mosaics. Students have class once a week.
