Student Activities :: YMCA Youth and Government

In the fall of 1986, Lake Country Christian School began participating in the YMCA Texas Youth and Government program. This program was organized in 1946 with its purpose being to prepare a selected group of young people for moral and political leadership in the American democratic process by providing guidance, training, and experience in the theory and practice of our state's legislative process. In 1960, the Judicial system of Youth and Government was added, and in the years since, programs including news media, lobbying, and government planning have been developed.

This leadership training experience is organized in three phrases: (1) local club training with weekly meetings at our school, (2) District Conference, and (3) the annual State Conference in Austin centering around activities in the State Capitol. Each year approximately 2,000 high school students participate in the program statewide with approximately 1,000 of those attending the State conference. Our local club at Lake Country Christian has developed into one of the premier delegations in the state with 65% of our high school student body participating. Each year Lake Country has been honored as our students have received numerous Distinguished Delegate awards and have authored a number of the bills that have passed the Youth Legislature. One of the most obvious areas of God's favor on our students is seen in the state officer elections. Since 1998, five Youth Governors, one Youth Lt. Governor, one Youth Sec. of State, six Youth Chief Justices, six Youth Attorney Generals, one Youth Presiding Judge, one Youth Broadcast Producer, one Editor-in-Chief of Print Media, two Presidents Pro Tempore of the Youth Senate, and one Youth Speaker of the House have been Lake Country students. In addition, Lake Country students have been selected to be part of the twenty-five-member Texas delegation to the Conference on National Affairs in North Carolina. Over forty of our students have been chosen to attend this prestigious conference.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth awards the Robert E. Churchill Memorial Youth and Government Scholarship to an outstanding male and female Youth and Government student each year. During our years in the program, a number of our students have received this scholarship. Specifically since 1998, ten of our LCCS students have received this $2,000.00 scholarship.

God has used this program at Lake Country Christian School to give our students a realization of the effect they can have on the destiny of our state and our nation. A number of our Youth and Government students are planning to enter the political arena and be used there to rebuild the foundations of God's principles in our government.
